Sheridan

Sheridan lies in southwest Mississauga between Dundas Street West to the north and the Queen Elizabeth Way to the south, from Winston Churchill Boulevard on the west to the Credit River valley on the east, taking in Sheridan Homelands, Sheridan Park and Sherwood Forrest.

Sheridan is low rise and owner occupied, and it holds a wide range of house types. Sheridan Homelands, built out through the 1960s and 1970s, is mostly brick ranch bungalows, side splits, back splits and two storeys on wide lots with double garages, on streets such as Homelands Drive, Thornlodge Drive and Perran Drive that curve and end in courts. The 1980s added larger two storey homes on the remaining parcels, and some starter townhouse rows sit near Erin Mills Parkway and Dundas Street. Sherwood Forrest, off Mississauga Road toward the Credit River, is the estate section, with big treed lots and custom houses. Sheridan Park, in the southwest corner near the research campus, has its own pocket of 1960s homes. Across the neighbourhood a growing number of the original bungalows and splits are being replaced by custom infill builds, so streetscapes now mix 1965 brick with new stone and stucco. Basements are full height and often finished, and many lots are wide enough for pools.

Sheridan has no GO station of its own; Clarkson GO at 1110 Southdown Road, the busiest station on the network after Union, is the one residents use for all day Lakeshore West service, reached by MiWay route 45 Winston Churchill or 29 Park Royal or a short drive. The Sheridan Centre Bus Terminal at 2225 Erin Mills Parkway is served by routes 29 Park Royal and 71 Sheridan, with routes 13 Glen Erin, 45A and 110 University Express stopping nearby on Erin Mills Parkway; the 110 runs to the University of Toronto Mississauga and Clarkson GO. The QEW has interchanges at Erin Mills Parkway and Winston Churchill Boulevard, Highway 403 is north via either road, and Dundas Street West is the local east west road to Erindale and the city centre.

Peel District School Board students attend Thorn Lodge Public School on Thornlodge Drive, Sheridan Park Public School at 2280 Perran Drive, which has a large French immersion enrolment, and Homelands Senior Public School for grades 6 to 8 in English and French immersion streams, which feeds Erindale Secondary School at 2021 Dundas Street West, founded in 1967 and offering the International Baccalaureate program. Catholic students go to St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Elementary School at 2480 Thornlodge Drive, which feeds Iona Catholic Secondary School at 2170 South Sheridan Way, a regional arts school opened in 1993. The University of Toronto Mississauga, founded in 1967 as Erindale College, is directly across Dundas Street on the Credit River. Catchments change, so confirm assignments with both boards.

Thornlodge Park at 2405 Homelands Drive is the recreation hub, home to the Sheridan Tennis Club, a splash pad, a playground, trails and an outdoor rink in winter. Sheridan Park off Sheridan Park Drive has a playground and outdoor fitness equipment, and Bruce Reynolds Park and smaller greens fill the subdivision. Erindale Park and the Credit River trails are minutes east on Dundas Street West. Sheridan Centre at 2225 Erin Mills Parkway is the daily errand stop, with a grocery store, about 70 shops and the Sheridan Library on its lower level, open since 1976; a master planned redevelopment by Sheridan Retail and Dunpar Homes proposes 16 buildings of 11 to 29 storeys around the retained retail anchor and a large public plaza, so expect change there. Sherwood Forrest Village on Mississauga Road adds a second plaza, and the Sheridan Park research campus on Speakman Drive is a large employer at the edge of the neighbourhood.

Sheridan suits families who want a wide lot, a double garage and a walkable school on a quiet street, and it suits renovators and builders who want a 1960s bungalow to rebuild on a mature lot. Buyers connected to the University of Toronto Mississauga or the Sheridan Park research campus can live within minutes of work. Commuters on the Lakeshore West line accept the drive or bus to Clarkson GO in exchange for all day trains. Downsizers who prefer a bungalow to a condo find plenty of them here.
