Morrison

Morrison is the southeast Oakville lakeshore district east of downtown. It stretches from the Morrison Creek valley and the Old Oakville streets on the west out toward Maple Grove Drive and the Ford and Clearview communities eastward, with the lake along its south side and Cornwall Road plus the rail corridor to the north. Locals fold it into 'Southeast Oakville' or 'Eastlake', and where the TRREB line sits against the neighbouring Ford community around Maple Grove is roughly drawn.

Morrison's housing runs from a few surviving 1920s and 1930s summer houses, through the postwar ranch bungalows and split-levels that filled the estate lots, to the current wave of custom builds. South of Lakeshore Road East, frontages of a hundred feet or more and depths running to the water appear on Morrison Road, Chartwell Road and the short cul-de-sacs off Lakeshore, and a rebuilt house there is usually a stone or brick two-storey with a three-car garage, a pool and a walk-out lower level. Between Lakeshore and Cornwall Road, streets such as Cairncroft, Linbrook, Devon, Watson and Douglas hold sixty to eighty-foot lots with a mix of original bungalows, renovated 1970s two-storeys and newer rebuilds, and this is where most of the turnover happens. Near Maple Grove Drive the lots tighten and a few 1980s pockets appear. There are effectively no townhouses or apartment buildings; the district is detached from end to end, with a scattering of estate-lot severances creating the odd new street.

Morrison is a driving district with the train close at hand. Oakville GO is a run of five to ten minutes west along Cornwall Road, and Lakeshore West trains from there make Union in a little over half an hour on an express, with VIA Rail an option too; Clarkson GO, just past the Mississauga border, sits about as far east along Royal Windsor Drive for anyone near Maple Grove. The QEW is reached at Trafalgar Road, Royal Windsor or Ford Drive, and the 403 splits from the QEW just east of the district for Mississauga and the airport. Oakville Transit runs the Lakeshore East and Cornwall corridors to the station, though frequencies on the residential streets are modest. Cycling along Lakeshore Road East is pleasant and popular on weekends, the Waterfront Trail follows the road here because the shoreline is private, and the Morrison Creek trail gives a green walk north toward the golf club.

The anchor is Oakville Trafalgar High School on Devon Road, a Halton District School Board secondary school with roots reportedly going back to 1908 in the downtown and a reputation that draws families to this side of the creek; check its exact boundary, because the public board assigns some Morrison streets elsewhere. Public elementary options include Maple Grove and E.J. James, and the Catholic board, HCDSB, sends children to St. Vincent and, for high school, St. Thomas Aquinas across town on Dorval Drive. Designated public schools host French immersion, while French-language families are bused to Viamonde or MonAvenir schools. Private education is a Morrison hallmark: St. Mildred's-Lightbourn School for girls and Linbrook School for boys are both on Linbrook Road, with Appleby College to the west and MacLachlan College near Cornwall Road also in range. Sheridan College is a ten-minute drive up Trafalgar Road.

Gairloch Gardens on Lakeshore Road East is the district's showpiece, a lakeside lawn and rose garden around the former Gairdner house, which the Town runs as a public art gallery, and it is where residents walk, sit and photograph weddings. Public access to the water is otherwise limited to a few small road-end parks, since most of the shoreline is private, and Morrison Creek's ravine gives the interior its walking route. Maple Grove Park and an arena nearby cover sports, and the Oakville Golf Club along Morrison Creek is one of several private clubs in reach. Shopping is deliberately sparse: the Maple Grove Village plaza at Lakeshore and Maple Grove handles a grocery run and a coffee, the Cornwall Road plazas near Maple Grove Drive carry a larger grocer and services, and downtown Oakville's Lakeshore Road shops are a few minutes west. The hospital, Oakville Trafalgar Memorial, is now at Dundas and Third Line, twenty minutes by car, after leaving its Reynolds Street site in 2015.

Morrison suits buyers who want land, mature trees and a house they can rebuild or expand without worrying about the neighbours' lot lines, and families set on Oakville Trafalgar or the private schools. It rewards people happy to drive for almost every errand and who prize quiet above convenience. It fails anyone hoping for a walkable shopping street, a condo or a townhouse, or a modest first house, since even the original bungalows trade on land value, and the carrying costs of a large lot near the lake are real. Construction noise from neighbouring rebuilds is part of life on many streets for now.
